The International Energy Agency (IEA) has recently published a market update predicting that global solar capacity additions will continue to lead the renewable energy sector, with a forecasted 310 GW of new solar installations in 2024. This growth is driven by several factors, including lower module prices, the widespread adoption of distributed PV systems, and supportive government policies encouraging large-scale solar deployment.

In 2023, global renewable capacity is expected to increase by 107 GW, reaching more than 440 GW, with solar contributing 65% of this growth (286 GW). A major portion of this growth will come from distributed generation, as residential and commercial solar systems gain traction worldwide.

Countries such as China, the European Union, the United States, and India are leading the way in expanding their solar infrastructure. The IEA also notes that while solar growth in Brazil may slow down due to changes in local regulations, Europe remains a key player. The EU alone will account for a significant portion of the increase, with markets like Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, France, Italy, and Sweden contributing to 82% of the region's growth.

As the solar industry continues to expand, competitive auctions and power purchase agreements (PPAs) are becoming the preferred methods for acquiring new projects. The IEA forecasts that competitive auctions will account for 65% of renewable capacity growth in Europe through 2024, with a notable shift toward fixed contracts for difference.
