There are three main types of solar panel mounting systems: roof mount, ground mount and pole mount.

Roof Mount

The most common mounting system for a solar panel system is a roof mount system.

Solar installations on sloped rooftops typically use a “penetration mount”, which fixes the racking that holds the solar panels to your rooftop by drilling multiple holes. The standard residential system uses rails attached to the roof to support rows of solar panels. Each panel, usually positioned vertically/portrait-style, attaches to two rails with clamps. The rails secure to the roof by a type of bolt or screw, with flashing installed around/over the hole for a watertight seal.

Flat roof systems typically use a weighted mounting system instead (known as a “ballast system”).

Ground Mount

A common and easy way to mount your solar panels is with a ground-mount solar system. If you are fortunate enough to have enough open space to build an “A” frame style ground mount system, you can be sure to place your panels in both the optimal southern orientation as well as the optimal pitch. It is also quite easy and affordable to make the ground mount system adjustable to get the best angle for each of the seasons in your region.

Pole Mount

The third most commonly used way to mount your new solar panels is with a pole-mount system. A pole mount system will use one or multiple poles to raise your panels off of the ground. This will allow you to leave open space on the ground if you do not have enough space for a ground-mount system and also allow you achieve the best possible orientation and angle.
